2011 Porsche 911 Speedster
Porsche 911 Speedster
Rattling low-slung, rattling sporting and selfsame uncommon: Porsche is to launching a diminished serial of the new Porsche 9-11 Speedster. Gainful court to the low Porsche exemplar to have the figure Speedster – the 356 Speedster from 1954 – the new simulation volition be circumscribed to upright 356 vehicles. The twoseater differs importantly from the otc members of the 9-11 kinfolk. In better custom, the 60 millimeter shorter windshield, the apartment shape of the sporty-looking manual translatable top and the feature two-bagger burble on the exchangeable top compartment lid determine the impinging visibility of the new 9-11 Speedster. Thereby devising this rear-wheel cause fomite’s consistency, which is 44 millimetres wider at the arse, surpass eventide more imposingly. The new Porsche 9-11 Speedster combines the authoritative features of this case of Porsche sports car with the foster improved operation of the stream 9-11 genesis.
From the presence, the Speedster is recognizable by its especial breast forestage, darkened breast lamps and lightlessness headlamp surrounds. Particular slope skirts and the independent ass proscenium with melanise “Speedster” inscription round its somebody aspect. The new exemplar reveals its complete Speedster lines with the top outdoors or unsympathetic. The Porsche engineers get highly-developed an alone manually operated transformable top to accomplish this.
The new Porsche 9-11 Speedster besides underscores its flashy standards with all-embracing burthen savings. Aluminum doors, the skip of the back arse organisation and the touchstone ceramic brakes (PCCB) importantly cut burthen. The new transformable top compartment lid consists of al and is so scarce any heavier than its importantly littler relation in the 9-11 Carrera S Cab. Contempt broad, extra equipment, this has enabled the Porsche 9-11 Speedster to just mate the slant of the open-topped Carrera S, 1,540 kilograms. In compounding with the increased locomotive operation, this results in a power-to-weight proportion of 3.8 kg/hp.
2011 Porsche 911 Speedster
The undischarged participating guard features in the new Porsche 9-11 Speedster are supplemented by warning occupier tribute. Course, lifesize airbags for the driver and rider are aboard as is the Porsche Face Impingement Aegis Organization (POSIP) with chest and header airbags. The Porsche engineers bear boost highly-developed the roll-over shelter arrangement fitted as stock altogether open-topped Porsche cars specifically for the Porsche 9-11 Speedster. In the consequence of the fomite’s roll concluded, the reflexive roll-over bars touch their wide-cut peak done the transmutable top compartment lid and besides the bottom windowpane if requirement.
Scorn its distinctive runabout feeling with the transmutable top compartment lid amply shut, the new Porsche 9-11 Speedster offers encourage storeroom distance for extra baggage bottom the seating. Collectively the greco-roman 9-11 trunk in the front, this results in a trunk bulk which is alone worthy for everyday use and fifty-fifty vacationing therein twoseater buggy course.
Based on the Porsche 356, the Speedster serial was launched in 1953 with a puristic sports car oblation two sports pail seating, doors with slide-in shaping slope windows and a truncated, elegantly curving windshield. In 1988, the Speedster based on the 9-11 Carrera famous its renaissance with the accession of a boost have: the transformable top compartment lid revealed its feature image guggle first. The following phase of the 9-11 Carrera’s phylogeny again gave ascending to a Speedster in 1993/1994. Thanks to their low unit numbers, all of these models have established themselves as highly sought-after collectors’ items.
The current 911 Speedster has been conceived by Porsche Exclusive – the company’s inhouse refiner which specialises in customising all Porsche vehicles and small series. The Porsche 911 Speedster will additionally herald in the 25th anniversary of Porsche Exclusive – to be celebrated in 2011 – and will again demonstrate Porsche Exclusive’s small series expertise following the major success of the 911 Sport Classic.
The Porsche 911 Speedster’s drive is a combination of the most high-performance units which Porsche offers in the 911 Carrera family: with 408 hp (300 kW), the uprated 3.8-litre six-cylinder tops the engine fitted in the Carrera S by 23 hp (17 kW). It operates together with the Porsche PDK as standard, thereby guaranteeing fastest acceleration values with minimal consumption and the lowest possible emissions at the same time. The drive concept is therefore a shining example of the Porsche Intelligent Performance efficiency concept.
With its enhanced agility, the modified 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine outstandingly matches the Porsche 911 Speedster. The flat engine develops its maximum output at 7,300 rpm, just short of the maximum revs of 7,500 rpm. The 408 hp engine therefore exploits the speed range even better than the Carrera S engine, which achieves its rated power 800 rpm earlier.
In the 3,000 rpm to 4,000 speed range, the new resonance intake system additionally attains significantly higher torque in comparison with the Carrera S engine, resulting in better acce leration. The Porsche 911 Speedster reaches its maximum torque of 420 Nm from just 4,200 rpm instead of 4,400 rpm in the case of the 911 Carrera S.
Modified intake system with six tuning flaps
The additional power offered by the 3.8-litre engine with direct petrol injection is the result of extensive intake duct reengineering by the Porsche engineers. In the newly developed resonance intake system, six vacuum-controlled air flaps switch between performance- and torque-optimised geometry. In the Carrera S engine, this task is undertaken by one single, central variable flap. Optimal resonance induction for cylinder charging is therefore generated in the relevant engine speed ranges, and thus also increased torque and higher power. This improved cylinder charging is additionally supported by machined intake ducts with flow-enhancing geometry in the cylinder heads. An exhaust system specifically developed for this ensures the appropriate exhaust backpressure. It also perfectly matches the Speedster in optical and acoustic terms: the sound is characteristically sporty, and the new, black tailpipes with nano coating contain the classic grille insert.
Faster shifting and acceleration
The Porsche 911 Speedster is exclusively available with the PDK transmission, which can also be shifted manually on the three-spoke steering wheel using ergonomically mounted shift paddles. Thanks to its intelligent combination of the efficiency of a manual transmission with the high shifting and driving comfort of an automatic, the Porsche PDK with seven gears is an ideal partner for the high-performance engine fitted in the Porsche 911 Speedster. As it changes gears without any interruption of tractive power, the Speedster accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds from a standing start, reaching 200 km/h (124 mph) after 15.3 seconds. Thanks to its generous torque, the vehicle also offers effortless bursts of speed: sprinting from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 120 km/h (75 mph) – a typical overtaking manoeuvre – takes just 2.8 seconds. Due to the high ratio of its seventh gear, the PDK also enables extremely economical driving. In the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the Speedster consumes an average of 10.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (27.4 mpg imp.), corresponding to a CO2 output of 242 grams per kilometre. This matches the Carrera S Cabriolet’s consump tion precisely.
The new Porsche 911 Speedster’s consistently sporty equipment also includes the Sport Chrono Package Plus, with which the sports car’s set-up can be rendered even more dynamic in two stages at the push of a button. When Sport mode is activated, the engine’s response is even more spontaneous, the PASM suspension’s control system switches to “harder” characteristics and the PDK changes gears even faster. Supported by the integrated “launch control” system, the driver is able to achieve optimal acceleration from a standing start, further reducing sprint times. The Porsche 911 Speedster then takes just 4.4 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph).
The second new function in the Sport Chrono Package Plus in combination with the PDK is a shifting strategy for extremely sporty driving, offering shortest possible response times and shift points optimised for race circuit usage. In this case, full-load upshifting is under taken at the engine speed limit with torque elevation. To enhance performance, overrun down shifting is carried out with engine revving.
Outstanding driving dynamics
The new Speedster has the most vehicle height to track width ratio of any standard Porsche 911. With the vehicle’s centre of gravity significantly below 500 millimetres, it offers optimal prerequisites for particularly agile handling with thrilling cornering.
The outstanding driving dynamics are the result of a chassis geometry which clearly distinguishes the Speedster from the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet: the track width is six millimetres wider at the front axle and 34 millimetres at the rear axle. The suspension set-up has also been adapted to these modified dimensions. A reinforced anti-roll bar is fitted on the rear axle, for example.
Like all top 911 vehicles, the Speedster is also equipped with the PASM active shock absorber system as standard. Individually controllable shock absorbers enable the driver to choose between two suspension programmes: “PASM Normal” or “PASM Sport”. The “Normal” setting offers a more comfortable basic shock absorber set-up, switching to a more sporty mode in the case of a dynamic driving style. In the “Sport” setting, however, a harder shock absorber characteristic curve is implemented to support a very agile driving style.
The new Speedster’s rear axle is equipped with a differential lock as standard. The locking values are 22 percent on acceleration and 27 percent on deceleration. The mechanical rear interwheel differential lock supports driving dynamics via improved traction on cornering at the handling limits and via increased vehicle stability during load changes when cornering. It also ensures more harmonious power transmission on alternating road surfaces.
The Porsche 911 Speedster is fitted with the best and most high-performance brake system offered by Porsche for road vehicles: the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB). The perforated and internally ventilated ceramic composite brake discs with a diameter of 350 millimetres weigh around 50 percent less than comparable grey cast iron brake discs. This reduction of unsprung masses is particularly beneficial to the driving dynamics. In combination with a brake lining which is also entirely autonomous, the ceramic brake discs immediately develop high and above all constant friction coefficients during deceleration. Thanks to their extremely hard surface, the ceramic brake discs offer exceptionally low abrasion compared with conventional brake discs. The life expectancy of the PCCB brake system is accordingly high.
Super-wide tyres on classically designed wheels
The tyres clearly indicate that the Porsche 911 Speedster’s focus lies on its rear axle: with 305/30 ZR 19 dimension tyres, whose tread is around seven centimetres wider than the 235 mm tyres at the front. As around 62 percent of the vehicle’s weight lie on the driven rear axle, the large tyre contact areas ensure high longitudinal and lateral grip. The tyres’ contact points, located far to the outer side, lead to outstanding support with little tendency to roll and thus high lateral acceleration potential. This results in handling which enables very high cornering speeds.
One of the most striking features of the Porsche 911 Speedster is the 19-inch Sport Classic wheel with high-gloss black painted rim spider. With a look clearly based on the ultimate Porsche wheel – the so-called Fuchs wheel – the reinterpreted wheel nevertheless has its feet set firmly in the present, matching the striking appearance of this exclusive, limited 911.
Flatter, wider – Speedster
Three striking characteristics make the new Porsche 911 Speedster unmistakable: it is extraordinarily low-slung, very wide and a pure two-seater, easily recognisable by the long convertible top compartment lid with its two eye-catching haunches. As the basis, the Porsche engineers used the body shell of a 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, a unitised, fully galvanised lightweight body with high percentages of higher- and ultra high-strength steels. In the rear area, borrowings from the “wide body” shell of the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4S Cabriolet led to a 44 millimetre increase in width above the rear wheels. The particularly light aluminium doors were taken from the 911 Turbo. The windscreen frame was shortened by 60 millimetres. With a height of 1,230 millimetres (1,284 millimetres with the roof closed), the Speedster is therefore the flattest of the current 911 series by far. With the top down, the Speedster is a total of 40 millimetres lower than a Carrera S Cabriolet. The new windscreen and convertible top shape also necessitated special Speedster side windows with an adapted, flat contour.
Two cover caps on the Speedster’s convertible top compartment lid indicate the more advanced, automatically exten ding roll-over protection system from the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. Thanks to the flatter out line, the Porsche 911 Speedster’s glass rear window is now inclined further towards the centre of the vehicle. The proven, automatically extending roll-over protection system is located beneath the convertible top compartment lid. Two flaps clear the way upwards in an emergency. When the convertible top is closed, two spikes on the two roll-over bars ensure that these pass specifically through the rear window and therefore break it in a controlled manner. The window is manufactured from safety glass, which disinte grates into non-hazardous, blunt particles on shattering. The high-level third brake light is additionally integrated into the con vertible top compartment lid.
Hand-crafted: convertible top with intelligent kinematics
Porsche’s body development specialists designed the new Porsche 911 Speedster’s manual convertible top completely from scratch. What has emerged is an easily operated, kinematic masterpiece which adheres to the puristic concept of the Speedster in a particularly demanding manner. The quality of the Speedster convertible top’s fabric, which is exclusively available in black, corresponds to the series production quality of the 911 Carrera Cabriolet models, whilst the soundproofing follows the classic Speedster approach. The front area of the roofliner is designed in exclusive, black material. The high-quality, manual convertible top is therefore entirely suitable for both daily use and driving at top speed.
In contrast to its predecessors, the end of the Porsche 911 Speedster’s hood lies on the convertible top compartment lid. To nevertheless attain the desired, flowing exterior contour in this area and ensure the required tightness, the engineers developed interior kinematics which pull the convertible top taut when it is manually locked. In this design, the convertible top fabric’s seal is pressed onto the convertible top compartment lid, creating a watertight seal. The ingenious kinematics are linked to the convertible top’s mechanical components, reliably preventing both water and draughts from entering the interior up to top speed. A transparent protective film is used to protect the Speedster convertible top compartment lid’s paintwork from contact with the supporting bow seal.
The entire mechanism is designed such that one person can open and close the convertible top with ease.
High-quality and exclusive
Aerodynamic fine tuning and individual design features round off the autonomous appearance of the new Porsche 911 Speedster, which is available solely in the pure blue colour developed exclusively for the Speedster or in the classic motor racing colour carrara white. An effective contrast is achieved via the elements designed in high-gloss black. The front apron differs from the standard apron due to vertically mounted bars in the centre air intake, strikingly drawn out radii and the front spoiler lip taken from the 911 Sport Classic. The new front end additionally extends the overall vehicle by five millimetres to 4.44 metres. With its striking openings for cooling the brakes, the front spoiler lip ensures fine aerodynamic balance together with the extendable standard rear spoiler. Components painted in high-gloss black underscore the high quality of the Speedster: the windscreen frame and the surrounds of the standard bi-xenon main headlights with dynamic steering-dependent headlamps are resplendent in shimmering black as are the air intake grilles, lower mirror shells and door mirror triangles. Appropriately, darkened front lamps have been fitted for the first time to round off the autonomous look of the front end – small but effective details and thus typical of Porsche Exclusive.
The view from the side is characterised by the Speedster’s consistent proportions both with the top closed and open. With the convertible top closed, the entirely new roof line is revealed by the shortened and more raked windscreen and the manual Speedster convertible top with correspondingly adapted side windows. When open, the Speedster’s convertible top compartment lid clearly indicates the concept of a pure two-seater based on the 911, ensuring an extremely powerful look together with the vehicle’s wide rear section. With its characteristic haunches, the Speedster convertible top compartment lid significantly extends the rear end in comparison with the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. The paintwork, in the same colour as the body, is visible with the top up or down, providing the Porsche 911 Speedster with yet another unique feature. Located in front of the convertible top compartment lid, the specifically developed crossbar’s soft-touch paint coating in the interior colour creates an optical transition between the exterior and interior.
When viewed from the side, the dynamically shaped side sills, painted in the vehicle colour, emphasise the wide rear end of the Porsche 911 Speedster. Based on the design of the pre-1989 Speedster, the same function is undertaken by the black decorative film on the rear side section in front of the rear wheel arch. As during the era of the Porsche 356 manufactory badges, a further detail is revealed at the level of the right-hand direction indicator: the Porsche Exclusive anniversary badge visualises the origin and tradition of the small series. In addition to the Porsche 911 Speedster, it shows the outline of the 911 Sport Classic plus the legend “25 years Porsche Exclusive” world-wide.
The Porsche 911 Speedster’s design language is revealed equally as clearly when viewed from the rear. The Speedster’s convertible top compartment lid is highly recognisable when open. The painted Speedster lettering also rounds off the high-gloss black details at the rear end of the vehicle. The LED technology is visible thanks to the standard rear lamps with clear glass look, in turn effectively emphasising the width of the rear.
To distinguish it still further, the Porsche 911 Speedster is equipped with its own rear apron. In the upper area, its lateral air outlet apertures pick up on the particularly sporty design of the GT vehicles. The autonomous number plate cut-out acts as the transition to the specifically developed exhaust system’s two powerful, fully integrated, black painted tailpipes with nanotechnology coating. With a diameter of 100 millimetres and perforated grille insert, the tailpipes underscore the autonomy of the vehicle’s optical appearance from the rear. First fitted on the 911 Sport Classic, the Speedster’s rear apron is equipped with ParkAssist sensors as standard. Each 911 Speedster, which is consciously aimed at collectors, comes complete with a custom-fit indoor car cover made of active-breathing, anti-static material plus bag, offering optimal protection for the exterior of the vehicle.
Full spec. Speedster style
The sporty appearance with borrowings from the Speedster’s past is continued in the interior. The Porsche 911 Speedster’s exclusiveness down to the very last detail becomes apparent immediately on opening the door: anodised in black for the first time, the door entry guards bear illuminated Speedster lettering plus an unlit Porsche emblem and the limited number of the small series. The leather-covered inner sideskirts and the colour co-ordinated floor mats with leather boarder and deviating trim seams pave the way to a genuine design highlight: the surface of the standard adaptive sports seats has been completely redesigned to match the Speedster theme. Painstakingly produced by craftsmen, the seat centres bear a chequered flag design in leather, alternating between black and the body colour. Double round seams have been consciously omitted from the seats in favour of black beading, whilst the seat bolsters are covered with leather in the body colour. The new seat design is rounded off by numerous add-on parts designed in smooth-finish leather and painted in black soft-touch paint plus the Speedster lettering embroidered into the headrests. The Speedster lettering is embroidered using pure blue thread if pure blue is chosen as the body colour, or using black thread in the carrara white variant.
The two-seater’s leather equipment consists of black smooth-finish leather, creating an effec tive contrast to the vehicle’s paintwork in interaction with the high-gloss black painted exterior parts. Depending on the body colour, the interior is softened by coloured touches which are also designed in smooth-finish leather – precisely as in the 911 Speedster’s 911 and 964 models. Selected contrasting seams in the exterior colour round off the equipment.
The Porsche 911 Speedster is of course fitted as standard with all of the leather-covered options appropriate to the vehicle concept from the current Exclusive range. Certain of these are covered in coloured leather developed for the 911 Speedster to match the relevant body colour. These include the leather-covered air nozzle housings, the switch panel trim strip and the door opener trims. To once again achieve a contrast, the air nozzles are covered with wafer-thin black leather. Behind the three-spoke steering wheel with 12-o’clock marking and the familiar shift paddles for operating the PDK manually, the Porsche 911 Speedster’s autonomous instrument cluster catches the eye. The housing is painted to look like aluminium whilst the instrument dials are black with Speedster lettering in the central tachometer. A black painted metal badge on the glove compartment lid bears the vehicle’s limited number. One further special feature is the aluminium gear selector and handbrake lever combination. The handbrake lever additionally bears inlaid Speedster lettering lavishly finished in black ceramic.
In addition to its harmonious interior and exterior concept, the Porsche 911 Speedster naturally offers all of the convenience functions and equipment details which customers of a very exclusive small series vehicle expect as standard: navigation module, telephone module, universal audio interface, voice control and CD/DVD changer form part of the standard equipment as do the BOSE® surround sound system, the home link function and the ParkAssist system. The leather-covered, automatically dimming interior mirror with rain sensor follows the design style of the Speedster convertible top compartment lid’s haunches. Preparation for the Porsche Vehicle Tracking System and the cruise control system round off the additional standard equipment fitted in comparison with a 911 Carrera S Cabriolet.
